Creative process, sgrafitto on engobe

  Creative process, sgrafitto on engobe

I’ve always been intrigued and inspired by the ceramics of Old Europe, Pre-colombian Americas, and the contemporary native cultures. The way they worked the clay, the perfection and details acquired with natural resources and tools. Their knowledge of fire and earth, their connection to the Cosmos and their way of expressing the human relationship with Nature and Spirit, just amazes me.

Years ago a dear astrologer friend looking at my birth chart, asked me if it didn’t interest me to work with my hands, “do some ceramics for example…” His comment puzzeled me because I never thought of that possibility. Four years ago, since I was living close to a town with a long ceramic tradition, I visited the Ixió School-Workshop and decided to try.

Since then, clay has molded my heart. Working with the earth is therapeutic for me, it’s not only an artistic apprenticeship but a personal one too. Learning to respect the tempos, letting the clay guide the way, letting go expectations and control. Humbleness is as important as chemistry in this creative process, that, even though it is undervalued by Contemporary Art, is fascinating.

Everything began when I wanted to make my own menstrual bowl to ritualize my blood offerings to Mother Earth, and with this intention, I began a journey of discovery, and creative possibilities, that hasn’t stopped growing. From menstual bowls other forms have emerged like pendants inspired by ancient female figurines, platters with a sgrafitto of a primitive woman giving birth, incense burners for rituals made with fire clay, dishes for ceremonies, bowls made by request with the shape of my client’s pregnant belly. Everything related with the art of ritual and ceremony, centered on femenine energy.
